Movement Disorder Surgery

Functional neurosurgery for movement disorders has matured with multiple approved and emerging technologies. The session covers DBS targets (STN, GPi, Vim) and their indications, closed-loop adaptive DBS (Medtronic Percept) and emerging directional leads (Boston Scientific Vercise, Abbott Infinity), focused ultrasound thalamotomy and pallidotomy (ExAblate Neuro), MRI-guided procedures, and the team-based selection of surgical candidates. Discussion addresses DBS programming complexity and remote monitoring, the comparison of unilateral vs bilateral procedures, dystonia DBS outcomes by aetiology, post-operative programming optimisation, the cost-effectiveness analyses, and emerging targets including ZI for tremor and PPN for gait freezing.
